Winslow Homer 1874 Matted Wood Engraving

"WATCH-TOWER CORNER OF SPRING AND VARICK STREETS, NEW YORK"

This is a print from Winslow Homer's New York City days and it shows a building and activity that I believe no longer exists in cities, that of watching for fires from an elevated perch. Back in the day of largely wood city buildings, rudimentary fire codes and lots of hay for horses and combustion, it was an essential activity to protect life and property.

Below is the print as matted (cropped a little in this picture) and enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve (which creates the camera reflections). This matted print in nice condition will easily pop into a standard size 16 x 20 inch frame.
