1874 Winslow Homer Wood Engraving

"Gathering Berries"

This wonderful genre engraving by Winslow Homer captures girls and boys in a field will cups and buckets gathering blueberries with haystacks in the field and a sailing ship in the bay in the background.

Philip Beam in his book on Winslow Homer says this print is part of Homer's "accent on carefree youth" that was "brought to a climax in the mid-seventies with his 'children's series'" and refers to this engravings as "the fine Gathering Berries," apparently second only to Snap-the-Whip in his estimation.

This is a full sheet, but the engraved wood plate was placed too high on the page creating a narrow border on the top and wide margin on the bottom, which is no problem when it is matted as shown below. It will come to you matted to a standard 16 x 20 frame size and enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve.

The Old Print Shop's unmatted example sells for $450 and this lovely print is well worth it. Since the top margin is narrow and we have lower overhead you get this great print at a bargain.
