1873 Winslow Homer Wood Engraving

"THE NOON RECESS"

This Winslow Homer engraving published in June 1873 pictures an old time one room school house during recess with a boy reading a book and in back of him a chalk board with the alphabet, a map of the United States and through the window his classmates playing. The young teacher leaning on her elbow with the class bell nearby looks like she's ready for the school year to end.

The school house pictured was from Hurley, New York, which also was the scene of Homer's oil on canvas also called "The Noon Recess," which is a little different from our engraving, and his New England Country School which pictures the same interior and the school teacher in front of the blackboard.

The engraving is in great condition with full borders and it will come to you matted to 16 x 20 inches and enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve as shown below.
