1860 Winslow Homer Matted Wood Engraving

"The Sleighing Season - The Upset"

This is an original 1860 Winslow Homer engraving of an accident while sleighing, called "The Sleighing Season - An Upset. In "Winslow Homer's Magazine Engravings," by Philip C. Beam (New York, 1979), the author has this comment about the engraving and the companion piece published on the same date in 1860:

A rambunctious, almost belly-laugh type of humor entered into a number of engravings. The Sleighing Season - The Upset and A Snow Slide in the City contain touches of slapstick.

Below is a picture of the left bottom corner which shows Homer's signature and the lady taking a fall.

Below is the print as matted (cropped a little in this picture) and enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve (which creates the camera reflection). The print has some spots of foxing along the bottom left and a repaired left margin but makes a nice presentation. The mat will pop into a standard size 16 x 20 inch frame.
