1850s Hand Colored Stone Lithographs of Birds of the West Hepatic Tanager
This striking reddish - orange bird identified by John Cassin, the Hepatic Tanaager (or Pyranga Hepatica) was first seen by the railroad expedition and survey in the San Francisco mountains of New Mexico. On the upper margin of the print it says "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys --- Cal. & Oregon" and " Birds. - Plate XXXI."
