1850s Hand Colored Stone Lithographs of Birds of the West

Cassin's Finch

These birds were first identified on January 22, 1854 at Pueblo creek, New Mexico and was named after John Cassin a courtesy extended to fellow ornithologists who often returned the favor. This is the first illustration of the birds ever published. On the upper margin of the print it says "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys ---35th Parallel" and  "Birds. --- Plate XXVII."

The description of the two birds and the location where discovered from the railroad expedition survey comes attached to the back of the backing mat.

Below is the lithograph as it will come to you matted and in a protective clear plastic sleeve.
