"Report Of The Commission Appointed Under The 8th Section Of The Act Of Congress Of June 21, 1860 To Examine Into The Organization, System Of Discipline, And Course Of Instruction Of The United States Military Academy At West Point"

Rare 1860 Congressional Report on the United States Military Academy at West Point

Headed by Jefferson Davis and Commented Upon Future Military Leaders of the Civil War including Winfield Scott, Robert E. Lee, George Meade, Joseph E. Johnston and George McClellan

Government Printing Office., Washington D.C.: published date: 1860. Hardcover. Original blind-stamped brown cloth. This is a very detailed report of the activities and findings of this Commission. Jefferson Davis, then a United States Senator was president of the commission. The last letter in the report to the commission in response to questions regarding what changes should be made at West Point to obtain the best officers qualified to perform their duties was from then Brevet Colonel Robert E. Lee, stationed in San Antonio. There are many other famous names who responded with letters appended to the report: George G. Meade (Capt.), A. H. Whipple (Capt), Winfield Scott, General Joseph E. Johnston and many others. Binding is rubbed and worn along edges, text is clean and the binding is tight and very good. 350 pages.

Below is a sample of the comments contained in the letters from experts, which constitute the bulk of the report. The first one  shown below is from the last page of the report, but probably the most famous commentator, Robert E. Lee, who was a former Commandant at West Point from 1852-1855.

Below is the end of the letter from the head of Union armies at the start of the Civil War, Winfield Scott.

A particularly astute and learned letter came from Joseph E. Johnston, already a General before the Civil War started.

This is a great piece of history and should be in the library of all those interested in the Civil War and United State Military Academy.
